It's so ronery without Facebook...

The Syrian government's decision to boycott Facebook is one which has caused a stir throughout the growing Syrian online community. Some have attributed this to a perceived activism which might have been growing on there, others to issues of "morality" but all agree (including myself) that the move is silly and petty. It is akin to the ban Syria had on FM radios in the eighties and early nineties, citing "security reasons". My argument then as now was that if lowly FM radios were such a 'threat' to natural security that they needed to be banned, we are in seriously deep sh*t (pardon my french).

The Syrian government knows how pathetic Syria's pseudo online 'activists' are, otherwise it would have rounded them all up ages ago. I simply can't think of any good reasons why it should have been banned, not that this is surprising. Anyhow, I care for my old pair of shoes more than for this story, the Syrian government can continue to pass unenforcable laws and the citizenry can continue pretending to follow them.

Freedom and liberty aside, I think facebook is a silly tool and for those of us who don't use it, it wouldn't make a difference, no?

But still...

Wassim,
Why the japanese "ronery"? ;)

Posh,
You're absolutely right but it's the "but still.." about it which makes it so popular there. For myself, it's more important as a way to keep in touch with friends and family. I know for some people it was taken up in lieu of a social life or life in general, but thankfully I'm not counted as one of them :)

It's actually the Kim Jong Il puppet from North Korea, so it's not just Japanese. I just couldn't take the facebook story seriously, it was just a comical attempt of imposing control and I likened it to that crackpot dictator from "Team America", an American film which came out a few years ago.

Wassim,
I know Kim Jong Il my friend, I was asking about the word "ronery"?

Anyways, the thing with japanese language is that they replace Ls with Rs, so Lonely would actually be "ronery" when pronounced "japanesey"... was just curious ;)

Ahh ok! I dunno, it just seemed like I'm ronery now without being able to facebook my friends in Syria.
